Indicator Report - Diabetes (Diagnosed) PrevalenceWhy Is This Important?Diabetes is an epidemic in the U.S. and worldwide. The latest US estimate is that 26 million Americans (8.3% of the U.S. population) had diabetes. New Mexico also has had a sustained increase in diabetes prevalence for the last decade. In 2009, among New Mexicans aged 18 years and older, 8.3% had diagnosed diabetes. About one-third of people with diabetes do not know they have the condition (undiagnosed diabetes). These data show only the percent of NM adults with diagnosed diabetes.Because New Mexico's population is growing, and the diabetes prevalence has slowly increased over the decade, ever higher numbers of New Mexicans are estimated to have diabetes. About 174,000 New Mexico residents were estimated to have diabetes in 2009; of these, about 42,700 did not know they have diabetes. Diabetes Prevalence in Adults Ages 18 and Over New Mexico vs. U.S., 2000-2009![]() Data NotesAge-adjusted to U.S. 2000 population. Diabetes prevalence for New Mexico is a mean percent; for the United States it is a median percent. Roughly one-third of people with diabetes are undiagnosed, that is, they don't know they have diabetes. The rates shown here are the minimum estimates of diabetes prevalence because these include only those who have been diagnosed with diabetes.Data SourcesBehavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey Data, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, together with New Mexico Department of Health, Injury and Behavioral Epidemiology Bureau.Other Views
