Health Indicator Report of Cancer Incidence - Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) refers to cancers of the lymphatic system. Each year, NHL accounts for over 4% of all new cancer cases and over 3% of all cancer deaths in the U.S. This equates to 73,000 cases and 20,000 deaths. The five-year survival rate is 71%. New Mexico has averaged about 360 new cases of NHL per year between 2010 and 2015. Improvements in the detection and diagnosis of NHL may account for some, but probably not all, of this increase. The causes of NHL are unknown, but studies have shown an association with certain chemicals that may impair the immune system, as well as certain types of viruses. The common mechanism for these factors appears to be immunosuppression.
