Health Indicator Report of New Mexico Population - Age 0-5
Understanding the demographic characteristics of New Mexico's youth population is critical for shaping public and private programs and policies. The number of children in the under-five age range (infants, toddlers, and pre-schoolers) determines the demand for daycare and early-education programs, health care, and other social services that many families rely upon daily.
Because childrens' brain growth and skill development starts from early infancy, public education and health policies that promote healthy maturation through the earliest years can create a foundation for later school achievement and, ultimately, success in adulthood. Also, due to their size, physiology, and behavior, young children are disproportionately vulnerable to many health hazards. Children breathe, drink, and eat more per unit of body weight than adults, so they may experience higher rates of exposure to whatever environmental contaminants or pathogens may be present.

This is a population estimate, produced by the University of New Mexico Geospatial and Population Studies program (GPS). These estimates are considered the most accurate estimates for the state of New Mexico. All population estimates apply to July 1 of the subject year. Estimates include fractions. The sum of population subgroup estimates may not exactly equal the overall state population estimate due to rounding error.- from Birth through Two Years Age in the Population, by New Mexico County, 2016
