Rates are age-adjusted incidence rates for skin cancer (malignant melanoma), ICDO: C440-C449.
New Mexico Tumor RegistryThe cancer incidence data were provided by the New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) for the entire resident population of New Mexico. The data were reported from New Mexico medical facilities including hospitals, clinics, physician offices, and pathology labs, as well as neighboring out-of-state facilities. NMTR routinely reviews cancer mortality data to ensure complete coverage of cancer incidence within New Mexico. Cancer cases were coded using International Classification of Diseases (ICD-O-3) codes.

U.S. DataComparable data for the U.S. and other states may be found on the National Cancer Institute'S Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program website, [https://seer.cancer.gov/].
- Numerator: The New Mexico Tumor Registry, University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, http://hsc.unm.edu/som/nmtr/.
- Population Estimates: University of New Mexico, Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) Program, http://gps.unm.edu/.
Cancer Incidence DatasetThe New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) cancer incidence datafile is not a closed database, which means that information on cancer cases may be updated for any given year. This may include addition or deletion of cases, as well as changes in patient or tumor characteristics. Hence, numbers on IBIS may change to reflect these updates when new years of data are added.
Cancer Incidence Population DataThe source of the IBIS population estimates is the University of New Mexico Geospatial and Population Studies (GPS) program. Cancer incidence rates computed in IBIS may vary slightly from corresponding rates computed from other online resources, which generally rely on population estimates provided by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER). You can learn about SEER population estimates from: [http://seer.cancer.gov/popdata/methods.html].
Calculation of Age-adjusted RatesThe age-adjusted rates in this query module were directly adjusted using 19 five-year age groups, consistent with the National Cancer Institute's SEER program methods.
NM-IBIS Population DataPopulation estimates for previous years are occasionally revised as new information becomes available. When publishing trend data, always be sure that your rates for earlier years match current rates on NM-IBIS that have been calculated with the most up-to-date population estimates.
